Great Expectations

Mountains

My son, don’t forget my teaching, but let your heart keep my commands; for they will bring you many days, a full life, and well-being. (Prov. 3:1–2)

Big Dreams

As fathers we have big dreams for our children: first female president, scientist who cures cancer, astronaut who colonizes Mars. It’s our job to push our kids to shoot for the moon (but not fall apart if they end up in Iowa).

Often the world fights our efforts to create lofty goals. Reports about the economy can make kids cynical. Even toys can be a downer. Popular children’s brand Little Tikes sells a Young Explorer workstation—a preschool cubicle, complete with double mouse pads. So instead of raising Susie Scientist, we’re rearing Olivia Office Worker.

Live Long and Prosper

When giving our kids dreams, we need to shoot beyond the sky to heaven. By encouraging our children to live God-honoring lives, they’ll benefit society and the people around them.

Before Spock ever uttered his famous words on Star Trek, King Solomon wrote the words of today’s verse, assuring his son that by keeping God’s wise commands, they would grow to experience “many days, a full life, and well-being.” If your kids are going to live long and prosper, they must know and remember God’s teaching. Encourage your children to memorize the Bible. Help them understand that His commands are for their benefit, not to take away their fun. Then watch your kids fly.

Bottom Line

Instead of solely pushing your kids to achieve earthly goals, encourage them to keep God’s commands.
