Authentic Life in Christ

Mountains

I have spoken these things to you so that My joy may be in you and your joy may be complete. (John 15:11)

Real Benefits

Deep joy is found in being part of the body of Christ, His church. The man who invests his time, energy, and abilities in his local community of faith can expect to receive many personal benefits.

Several years ago Dr. K. P. Yohannan preached a sermon in Kerala, India, using John 15 as his text and the body of Christ as his subject. He began by citing some of the typical blessings we often rightly associate with being involved in the life of the church—serving each other; laughing, sharing and praying together; being honest with one another; challenging and being accountable to one another; encouraging one another. These are all good things we should be thankful for. But authentic body life involves even more than that.

Real Body Life

First, he said, a church should be Christ-centered, a characteristic we may need to work on, considering that more than twenty-eight thousand denominations currently exist in the world, not all of which are particularly Christ-centered. Second, Dr. Yohannan said that churches must acknowledge their common ground. Unity in the church around the historic, central doctrines is absolutely essential. Finally, he said love needs to be paramount. Love must be evident in word and in deed.

These things may be challenging, but they are essential for the body of Christ to thrive and grow. Are you experiencing these elements in your church? How can you contribute to a more authentic life together as believers?

Bottom Line

Invest yourself in the body of Christ, and enjoy the blessings of body life.
