He lets me lie down in green pastures; He leads me beside quiet waters. He renews my life; He leads me along the right paths. (Ps. 23:2–3)
Overly Busy
The spiritual life is not frantic or distracted or overly busy. Those are not “fruit of the Spirit.” Patience and kindness are, however. And those Spirit-produced qualities are quick to be lost in the overly busy person’s life. Who has time to be kind or love, to experience joy or enjoy peace? Certainly not the person who’s always on the run. And that means the average Christian in our culture doesn’t have time . . . or doesn’t make time.
There is a better way, though. Jesus invites us into a life that results in wholeness and purpose rather than disintegration and chaos. But we must be willing to accept His invitation. We need faith and courage to be willing to swim against the current of our culture.
Gotta Get Away
The order of verses 2 and 3 in Psalm 23 is instructive. First, God leads us to rest and reflection, and this rest and reflection results in a renewed life that walks the right paths. In other words, slowing down allows for intimate communion with God, and this produces peace, perspective, and purpose. God is not the author of confusion but of clarity. Getting away, even in the form of a daily quiet time, helps center a person in God and in His perfectly paced will. Make sure you’re taking enough rest so you can gain His perspective. It’s an absolute necessity.
Bottom Line
Experiencing the peace of God and enjoying His perspective is largely a matter of how we organize our lives. We must make time to hear from Him.
