Suffering and Joy
Suffering and Joy

Is anyone among you suffering? He should pray. Is anyone cheerful? He should sing praises. (James 5:13)
Prayer
Ask any moderately sized group of Christians, and the answer to James’s question about suffering will always be yes. We suffer often. There’s no escaping suffering in a fallen, broken, sinful world. If you’re not currently suffering, you will be sooner or later. That’s just the way it is.
But there is help. According to James the suffering person should pray. A lot of times we do this instinctively. We’re desperate. We know we need God’s help. We turn to Him in prayer, begging Him to relieve the pain and change the situation. But sometimes it seems like we would rather just sit and stew, complain and worry. It’s almost like we’re in shock over the situation and unwilling to accept reality. We believe that by thinking about the problem over and over again, we’re somehow going to solve it. What works, however, is turning to God in prayer.
Praise
Of course, there will be times when everything is going great in our life and we’re downright cheerful about it. In those times James says we should sing for joy. We should praise God unreservedly. Again, a lot of times this happens naturally, but sometimes we can hold back a little because we know the good times won’t last forever. That’s no way to live, though, always waiting for the other shoe to drop. So sing for joy while you can. It will strengthen you for later.
Bottom Line
Life has its ups and downs. When you’re suffering, pray. And when things are going great, praise. In both cases you’ll be turning your attention to God.
