Bond Servant of Christ, Part 4

Mountains

Don’t brag about yourself before the king, and don’t stand in the place of the great; for it is better for him to say to you, “Come up here!” than to demote you in plain view of a noble. (Prov. 25:6–7)

Spotlight Seekers

A fourth characteristic of a bond servant is this: your position is in the background, and your master’s position is in the forefront. Humility is a hallmark of the bond servant. He never forgets who the master is and who the servant is. Jesus Himself warned His disciples to avoid becoming like those teachers of the law who loved the place of honor at banquets (see Matt. 23:1–6). That’s not a servant’s attitude. The servant isn’t concerned with what others think and doesn’t have designs on getting the credit, the limelight, the promotion.

Hiding behind the Cross

If anyone had a right to the spotlight, it would have been the apostle Paul. Yet in 1 Corinthians 2:2 he shunned the spotlight, remarking, “I didn’t think it was a good idea to know anything among you except Jesus Christ and Him crucified.”

There is also the matter of jealousy between bond servants. If God chooses to honor another and not us, that’s none of our business. The bond servant doesn’t compare his service or reward with another’s. Everything already belongs to Christ. There is nothing left to sacrifice. Instead, the words of a bond servant are simple: “We are good-for-nothing slaves; we’ve only done our duty” (Luke 17:10).

Bottom Line

Jesus died so people could break free from their chains of sin and become bond servants of the King of kings—for life and eternity!
