Checks and Balances
Checks and Balances

Man does not see what the Lord sees, for man sees what is visible, but the Lord sees the heart. (1 Sam. 16:7)
Listening, Watching
The court reporter typed steadily away, never looking up, transcribing every word of the trial exactly as it had been said. Sometimes the judge or lawyers would ask the court reporter to read back parts of the witness’s testimony. When the trial was over, the transcript was crucial in determining the defendant’s guilt or innocence.
Just as court reporters are always listening, surveillance cameras in many places are always watching. Kids often love to watch themselves on a store monitor, but shoplifters aren’t nearly as excited about the ever-present eye of hidden cameras. Cameras now are even used to catch cars speeding or running red lights. They help keep us honest.
On Paper
Imagine if you had a way to do a transcript or surveillance video of your life. How would the things you’ve said today to your wife, children, friends, or coworkers look on paper, exactly as you said them? How about that video camera that sees you when nobody else is around?
Being willing to be held accountable for how we live is an important part of growing in Jesus. Left to ourselves, we tend to get in trouble. Self-deception is a serious threat. So enlist the aid of some friends who have permission to ask you the tough questions that can help keep you from falling into sin. Remember, you are always at risk.
Bottom Line
Think about the things you say and do. If something seems a little off, confess it to God, and ask a friend to help hold you accountable.
