When will I also do something for my own family? (Gen. 30:30)
Jacob’s Concern
Every man is concerned about his family and fortune. In Genesis 30–31, the patriarch Jacob had grown a sizable family for which he was responsible. To accomplish his desires and dreams, Jacob needed to make money. So he made a seemingly impossible financial arrangement with his father-in-law (see Gen. 30:31–33), and yet God blessed Jacob so that he was able to provide for his family (v. 43).
In frightening economic days many men are concerned about their finances and their ability to take care of their families. And while wise financial planning is crucial, the most important element in financial success is the blessing of God.
Jacob’s Secret
Jacob serves as an excellent example to men who are concerned about their finances. First, he was willing to begin with nothing plus God—“You don’t need to give me anything” (Gen. 30:31). Is God your main resource? Second, he was willing to work—“You know how hard I have worked for you” (30:26). Are you a hard worker? God blesses diligence. Third, he was honest—“my honesty will testify for me” (30:33). Are you willing for your integrity to answer for you? Fourth, Jacob honored God in the tithe—as a young man starting out, he made a vow to put God first in his finances (28:22). The ingredients for Jacob’s financial success were dependence on God, hard work, and honesty, wrapped in an opportunity.
Bottom Line
Depend on God for guidance with your finances.
