The Lord spoke with Moses face to face, just as a man speaks with his friend. (Exod. 33:11)

Face Out

Late-night talk-show host Conan O’Brien once joked that Facebook, Twitter, and YouTube were joining forces to create one huge time-wasting website. The new site was called: YouTwitFace.

While O’Brien’s joke is obviously funny, the amount of time teens spend in front of a computer, cell phone, or tablet screen is no laughing matter. Oxford University neuroscientist Susan Greenfield believes it can be harmful. She says repeated exposure to social networking can actually damage children’s brains. Her research suggests that sites such as Facebook can decrease attention spans, encourage instant gratification, and foster self-centeredness.

Face-to-Face

As fathers we must set limits for our children, especially when it comes to potentially detrimental behaviors. While the computer can make homework and research easier, too much screen time hinders our children’s social abilities. Personal relationships and communication skills are best formed face-to-face. As the verse above reminds us, “The Lord spoke with Moses face to face, just as a man speaks with his friend.” God is a personal God. He spoke to Moses personally, and He wants us to build relationships the same way. When our children make real-world friends, they’re better equipped to succeed in the future. Encourage your children to spend more face-to-face time with friends.

Bottom Line

Do your children spend too much time on the computer? Set limits and enforce the rules so they’ll learn better friendship skills.
