Mellowness of Heart
Mellowness of Heart

Rest in God alone, my soul, for my hope comes from Him. He alone is my rock and my salvation, my stronghold; I will not be shaken. (Ps. 62:5–6)
Busy Man
You have responsibilities and concerns and things to get done. That’s good. God designed you to carry responsibility, and you’re happiest when you’re doing that well. Moreover, your character grows as you do what you’re supposed to do even when it is difficult, inconvenient, and tiring.
There’s no utopia on earth. Most of us are not living in monasteries where we can devote hours of our day to quiet reflection and prayer. That’s the reality. And that’s not what God is calling most of us to anyway. He wants His people out in the world being salt and light and serving others in love. But that doesn’t mean He wants His people burned out, exhausted, distracted, and discouraged.
Mellow Heart
There’s a way to live a restful life amid all the stress and busyness. One author described this as living with “mellowness of heart.” That’s a good description. It’s the complete opposite of living with a distracted, striving heart. It means experiencing the “rest” God has provided us by salvation, not only in spiritual terms but in practical living. It means learning to take little breaks throughout the day to recalibrate. Even taking two minutes to read some Scripture and pray can work wonders in slowing you down and giving you some perspective on what’s important. Remember, your wisdom and strength come from the Lord.
Bottom Line
Returning to the Lord and resting in Him is something we can do even as we carry out our many responsibilities. We can’t afford not to.
