Seeing Clearly

Mountains

The eye is the lamp of the body. If your eye is good, your whole body will be full of light. (Matt. 6:22)

The Power of Truth

How you look at life can make all the difference. Jesus certainly taught that. In Matthew 6:19–21, He told the disciples not to pursue earthly treasures because they’re so fleeting. He then went on to inform them that they can’t serve both God and money. Besides, since God is their Father and He promises to take care of them, there’s really no reason for them to worry about money or their life or anything else.

What Jesus is doing—both for His original listeners as well as for us—is giving us a large dose of truth that could potentially change how we see everything in life. The key is having “good eyes” with which to see the truth of His teaching and believe it.

How This Plays Out

We need truth in every area of life, but let’s take a look at just one: entitlement versus gift. Sadly the natural human bent is not toward gratitude but toward ingratitude. We think we deserve certain things. And generally speaking, the more we have, the more we think we deserve what we have and more. In other words we operate with a sense of entitlement—people owe us, the world owes us, God owes us. But the truth is, everything we have is a gift—our possessions, our relationships, our lives. We need clear eyes to see that. Ask God to help you see clearly.

Bottom Line

Make sure you’re seeing life the way God sees it. Make sure you’re allowing the light of His Word to shine into your life.
