Marriage Marathon

Mountains

Endurance must do its complete work, so that you may be mature and complete, lacking nothing. (James 1:4)

Couples, Take Your Mark

If you’re married, think back to your wedding day. As you stood in front of your family and friends, you may have felt like a sprinter ready to bolt down the aisle and start a new life together. But as you’ve gone through a few years of married life, you’ve probably discovered that marriage isn’t a sprint—it’s a marathon. You’ve got to pace yourself.

As the world record holders for the longest marriage, nobody knows this better than Herbert and Zelmyra Fisher. A couple of years ago, they answered some questions on Twitter. When asked about what they do after a bad relationship day in their marriage, they said, “Remember, marriage is not a contest—never keep score. God has put the two of you together on the same team to win.”

Relational Endurance

Winning in marriage, just like winning a marathon, takes endurance. Married life will have its share of uphill climbs. So the next time you find yourself working hard and out of breath in your marriage, it doesn’t mean you should give up. It just means you need to dig deep and show some endurance. James 1:4 reminds us “endurance must do its complete work.” When you’re facing an uphill battle in your marriage, keep going! You’ll find that God will give you as many second winds as you need when you continue to endure in His strength.

Bottom Line

Stay committed to finishing the “race” of your marriage. Winning means crossing the finish line together.
