Mountains

Be on your guard and diligently watch yourselves, so that you don’t forget the things your eyes have seen and so that they don’t slip from your mind as long as you live. Teach them to your children and your grandchildren. (Deut. 4:9)

Making the Most of Your Time

Spending time with our children is a good thing. An Oxford University study showed that fathers today spend as much as ten times more time with their kids than dads did in 1975. But are we making the most of our time? Is the time we spend with them meaningful?

Being together can create lasting bonds, but we must be intentional. Research shows family dinners are less common. When families do eat together, the television is often on. Time spent watching movies has also increased. As fathers, we must capitalize on our time with our children, even if it isn’t as much as we’d like sometimes. And as today’s verse says, we need to diligently watch ourselves so we don’t become spiritually lazy and fail to teach our kids how to live biblically through our example and words.

Spend It Well

Just as Moses encouraged God’s people to teach their children about the things they had seen God do in their lives, we must do the same. Tell your kids how God is active and real in your life. Pass down the stories of God’s goodness to your family. Discuss deep spiritual issues with them. Ask them questions about their faith. By helping to build a spiritual foundation in your children, you’ll know you are spending your time well.

Bottom Line

Think of a conversation you’ve been wanting to have with your kids; then go have it.
