Spun Out

Mountains

Even a fool is considered wise when he keeps silent, discerning, when he seals his lips. (Prov. 17:28)

Eraser Boy

The phone rang, and the caller ID said it was his son’s school. Apparently, his boy had been scratching his ear with a pencil when the eraser came off and got stuck inside his ear cavity. After a mad dash to school and some amateur doctor work, the thing still wouldn’t budge. It took a trip to a real doctor the next day, a specialist even, to get it removed. No, really, you can’t make this stuff up!

In the end, however, it was just another “surprise” that happens every day to somebody. Yes, the eraser-in-the-ear episode was frustrating for the young man’s parents, but it happened. They dealt with it and then went on about the business of being a family. If this was the worst thing they ever faced, life was indeed good.

Champ

There’s more to the story, however. Less than an hour after getting the eraser stuck, the boy finished third in the school spelling bee with it still in his ear. That may not have happened had a mountain been made out of that molehill by ranting and raving about it.

Proverbs 10:19 says, “When there are many words, sin is unavoidable, but the one who controls his lips is wise.” How many times have you been in a situation where the smallest things turned into a major problem because of a poor split-second reaction? Next time, think before you speak. You’ll be amazed at the difference some self-control makes.

Bottom Line

Don’t let life’s everyday surprises spin your day—and your life—out of control.
