Mountains

A man’s heart plans his way, but the Lord determines his steps. (Prov. 16:9)

Constant

At the end of the year we tend to look back and evaluate how we did. Did we keep our resolutions? Were we disciplined in our eating, our exercising, our devotional life? Did we consistently invest in the relationships that matter most? Did we work hard to improve ourselves professionally? This can be a dreary exercise if we feel like we came up short once again.

Perhaps we ought to try another approach. Maybe it’s not the best idea for us to decide what growth looks like and then set out to do it. At some point we probably need to face reality and ask ourselves if what we’re doing is really working.

Guidance

God wants us to plan and take initiative, but it is so easy to leave Him out of the process. Even if we are certain the goals we set are God honoring, this doesn’t mean we won’t try pursuing them in our own strength. A better approach is to ask God to direct us and help us each step of the way. We are completely dependent on Him for success and growth. We will sometimes fail, and we will need His forgiveness often. The Christian life is full of fresh starts. It is a life of continual repentance and faith. To grow spiritually is to depend on God more, not less. Our main goal should be to stay close to Him.

Bottom Line

As we focus all of our energies on staying close with God, we will accomplish far more than we could ever do on our own. Make God Himself your goal.
