Put on Kindness

Mountains

Put on heartfelt compassion, kindness, humility, gentleness, and patience. (Col. 3:12)

Plenty of Opportunities

In this rough-and-tumble world of ours, kindness can be in short supply. People are so busy and frazzled that their concern for other people—basic kindness—can get left in the dust.

And yet the all-too-common coarseness in our society actually presents a great opportunity for Christians—for you—to be different. As the Roman philosopher Seneca once said, “Wherever there is a human being, there is an opportunity for kindness.” Jesus told His followers to “let your light shine before men, so that they may see your good works and give glory to your Father in heaven” (Matt. 5:16). Be assured, kind people shine brightly for God.

Be a Blessing

Adopt the mind-set that everyone around you needs and deserves your kindness. Believe that you possess the God-given power to bless other people through your kindness, and then look for ways to do it. Again the opportunities are endless. Take the grocery store cashier. That’s a person who could use your smile and your kindness. After all, he or she has likely been dealing with a lot of cranky (or at least preoccupied) people all day. Your kindness can make a difference. The same goes for your coworkers. Yes, you’re busy, but take the time to be kind.

Everyone wins with kindness. It brings joy to both the giver and receiver, and it tends to have a cumulative effect. One kind deed inspires another.

Bottom Line

Kindness never goes out of style. God wants His people to represent Him well by showing kindness to others. Look for opportunities to be kind.
