The Jebusites had said to David: “You will never get in here. Even the blind and lame can repel you.” (2 Sam. 5:6)
Naysayers Are Loud
Jerusalem was intended to be a center of worship for God’s people. But even as Joshua led the Israelites to take the promised land, the city went unconquered. Years later David had a vision of unifying his kingdom, and he believed Jerusalem would be a good capital city.
A big vision always attracts people who are against it, and at this time David was surrounded by them. Author Gordon MacDonald calls these people “VDPs,” or “Very Draining People.” Their last seven words are typically, “We never did it that way before.” The Jebusites were like that. They tried to get inside David’s head, saying “even the blind and lame can repel you.”
Nevertheless
“Yet David did capture the stronghold of Zion” (2 Sam. 5:7). Despite the fact that it had never been done, that he was surrounded by VDPs, that his strength was lacking, David did what no Israelite had ever done before: he conquered the city of Jerusalem.
What vision has God given you that has attracted criticism? God never trusts His work to those who can do it apart from Him. He gives His greatest assignments to those who are weak so that He may show His strength through them.
They say it’s never been done before? Maybe God is waiting for you to be the person to do it! Don’t take your cues from the critics!
Bottom Line
Focus not on the greatness of your task but on the greatness of your God.
