Leadership Training

Mountains

I didn’t think it was a good idea to know anything among you except Jesus Christ and Him crucified. (1 Cor. 2:2)

Jesus and Our Bootstraps

Many of us want to grow in our personal and professional lives. It’s why bookstore shelves are bulging with volumes on leadership and other self-help themes. Some even claim to distill Jesus’ teaching into a set of neutral “best practices” anyone (Christian or not) could adopt.

The irony here is that Jesus didn’t intend to create a newer, better set of do’s and don’ts. He came to blow a hole in sin’s domination of our soul. He came to purchase redemption for men, to birth in us a radically new life that would change the whole of our being.

Jesus Alone

Books and activities are fine, of course, as far as they go. But it’s easy to expend our time and energy seeking lesser knowledge and in so doing lose our first love. Paul reminds us of the heart of the matter: not “to know anything . . . except Jesus Christ and Him crucified.”

The clutter and noise of a thousand things are pressing against us at all times, tempting us to follow many rabbit trails in life and faith. Yet true fruitfulness will manifest itself in our lives only as we remain focused on the simplicity of the gospel. God has done everything; we are complete in Him. When we put on “the mind of Christ” (see 1 Cor. 2:16), we will find ourselves inwardly thriving instead of striving. Now that’s what you might call true leadership training.

Bottom Line

Consider cutting back some activities if that’s what it takes to spend time with the Savior through prayer and His Word.
