Relationship Realities

Mountains

When there are many words, sin is unavoidable, but the one who controls his lips is wise. (Prov. 10:19)

Don’t Tread on Me

Marriage is wonderful, but it isn’t easy. Each couple brings enormous differences to the table: different tastes, hobbies, habits. These differences (even regarding simple things) can cause us to clash, creating friction, bitterness, and conflict. These sparks are then fanned into a roaring fire by a culture that tells us to stridently demand our rights in all situations. The message is, in effect, “Don’t tread on me, and heaven help you if you do.”

An Alternative

Into such an incendiary environment, the Bible calls us to self-control, wisdom, restraint, and humility. Yes, as men we are the leaders of our home. But remember: our wives are helpmates and companions designed by God, having a whole range of intuition and sensitivity we typically don’t possess. Why wouldn’t we want to take advantage of those gifts? In fact, as leaders we are commanded to be good stewards of those gifts.

Therefore, whatever the issue, let’s resolve to listen. Or to loosely paraphrase Proverbs 10:19, we need to “put a sock in it.” Relationships, especially marriage, are prosperous only to the degree that we humble ourselves and restrain quick offense. As we exercise caution and care toward our wives, God will move to bring real unity and understanding.

Bottom Line

When we feel hurt, snubbed, or misunderstood, it seems impossible to be gentle and humble. And it is, on our own. But we’re not on our own. Ask God to give you grace and humility.
