Superabundance

Mountains

His divine power has given us everything required for life and godliness through the knowledge of Him who called us by His own glory and goodness. (2 Pet. 1:3)

What We Lack

The world bombards us with messages of what we lack. Madison Avenue tells us we are not good-looking enough, our bodies not toned enough. The news media constantly tell us of a crumbling economy, political instability, and civil unrest, assuring us that our way of life is in constant danger. The cool, hip people of the world remind us of our social ineptitude. Well-meaning friends discourage us in their attempts to “help” us by recounting our flaws and the things we do wrong. Sadly this message of deprivation can even come from pulpits where preachers turn the Christian message into a self-help program, offering principles and spiritual exercises that place the burden of transformation on our shoulders, thus negating the grace of God.

What We Have

In contrast, God’s Word emphasizes all we have in Christ. In Christ, God has given us “everything required for life and godliness” (2 Pet. 1:3). And our sufficiency in Him is sufficient enough to ward off any sense of deprivation in any other area of life. We are not those who lack, who fear the future, or who are overly troubled about the present. The key to our transformation is not in continually ramping up our own efforts but in realizing that God has already done an amazing transforming work in us. We have all we need to change.

Bottom Line

Christ has given us all we need and much more to live a God-honoring life of joy and peace.
