Knowing the Enemy
Knowing the Enemy

I have done this so that we may not be taken advantage of by Satan. For we are not ignorant of his schemes. (2 Cor. 2:11)
Read the Book
During World War II, General George C. Patton’s troops and tanks were engaged in a counterattack of German forces under General Erwin Rommel. Patton is reported to have shouted in the thick of the battle, “I read your book, Rommel!” In Rommel’s book, Infantry Attacks, the famed “Desert Fox” had carefully detailed his military strategy. And Patton, having read it and knowing what to expect, planned his moves accordingly.
Satan has authored no book, but God has fully exposed our enemy’s tactics in the Bible. Shrouded with a mysterious veil of camouflage, the devil must be unmasked if we are to win the spiritual war. We must first know our enemy if we are to defeat him.
Apply the Strategies
Paul was aware of Satan’s tactics, and he reminded the Corinthians to stay alert. Jesus, too, knew who and what He was up against in the desert. We need to recognize that we’re in a spiritual war with an enemy bent on our destruction. We need to be vigilant!
When Satan tempts us physically, we are to run away. When he tempts us visually, we are to focus on what is good. When he tempts us spiritually, we are to draw near to God. When he tempts us emotionally, we must recall the truth. Stay alert!
Bottom Line
The effectiveness of Satan’s strategy requires ignorance on our part. Wise up and know the enemy’s strategy.
