Inevitable Change

Mountains

Abraham and Sarah were old and getting on in years. Sarah had passed the age of childbearing. (Gen. 18:11)

Reality

At a party, just three months before my daughter was born, I calmly remarked, “Having a baby will not change my life.” Momentary silence was followed by an eruption of deep belly laughter. In a few months I came to understand just how wrong I was.

Sarah, Abraham’s soon-to-give-birth wife, knew what my friends knew: having a baby does change one’s life. She had witnessed others face the challenge. They were much younger. She was old. She knew the challenges and difficulties this life change would create.

Readiness

When a baby is coming, the parents have approximately nine months to prepare a room, to buy the needed essentials, to adjust their lifestyle, to monitor their budget. In a word, change. A failure to adjust and make the needed changes leads only to frustration.

Like having a baby, change is here to stay. We can’t always control the circumstances, but we can control our perspective about change. The next time you are faced with any type of change, challenge yourself to think through some different perspectives, then choose one that will help you productively manage the change. To thrive in life, we must be able to deal with change. We must develop an unshakable inner confidence that we can handle anything that comes our way.

Bottom Line

When facing change, acknowledge the past, accept the present, and anticipate the future.
