Parental Influence

Mountains

Our fathers sinned; they no longer exist, but we bear their punishment. (Lam. 5:7)

The Trickle-down Effect

Have you ever read this verse: “The fathers eat sour grapes, and the children’s teeth are set on edge”? (Ezek. 18:2). This verse illustrates the biblical principle that one generation can suffer for the sins of another (see Exod. 20:5). While this was a popular refrain in Ezekiel’s time, today we might phrase it: “The fathers have drunk too much beer, and the children wake up with a hangover.” Sobering words—“Our fathers sinned but we bear their punishment”—a present generation pays the penalty for the errors of a previous generation.

Parental influence is key. Parents communicate moral and ethical values to their children. Recall that Abraham was deceptive. Well, guess what, so was his son Isaac. And so was Isaac’s son Jacob! That’s often how it works unless there’s recognition of the problem, repentance, and divine intervention.

Examine Your Example

Children listen to and watch their parents for clues about how to live and behave. Paul said, “Imitate me, as I also imitate Christ” (1 Cor. 11:1). Rely on Him to empower you to live an authentically righteous life before your children. When you seek Christ daily through prayer and His Word, you will change and be strengthened. You will be able to set a godly example for your children to follow, no matter your past or your family’s past.

Bottom Line

You have been given the privilege and responsibility of shaping your children for Christ. They are looking to you. Make sure you’re looking to Christ.
