A Lasting Marriage

Mountains

“They are no longer two, but one flesh. Therefore what God has joined together, man must not separate.” (Matt. 19:6)

For Better or Worse

When things get difficult in a marriage, it is not unusual for one or both partners to ask themselves: Did I marry the right person? But that’s the wrong question, and your emotions will give you the wrong answer. Even if you are not happy in your marriage, and even if you did something that flagrantly violated the Scripture—such as marrying a non-Christian when you were a believer—God has clearly and repeatedly said He considers marriage sacred and binding. He does not want you to bail out. So the real question is: How do I make this marriage work?

Limited Options

Start by taking divorce off the table. This may mean working through the tough consequences of making an unwise choice. Instead of thinking up ways to get out, strategize ways to stay in. Once you decide “I am going to make this work,” you can get the prayer support, counseling, mentoring—whatever it takes—to equip you to save your marriage. It may seem like a long, uphill battle, but you can make progress if you persevere.

Remember that God is pulling for you. He will give you the grace to make it if you will trust Him on this big issue. Keep in mind that some of the best marriages are ones that weathered the biggest storms. Marriage takes a lot of faith and effort. Everyone’s does.

Bottom Line

The marriage you are in right now is the marriage God calls you to preserve and protect. If you’re struggling in your marriage right now, don’t give up!
