Playing Offense
Playing Offense

He gave Himself for us to redeem us from all lawlessness and to cleanse for Himself a people for His own possession, eager to do good works. (Titus 2:14)
Do the Right Thing
Steve was a new Christian. When he heard about the church basketball league, he thought it would be the perfect way to meet like-minded guys. Just one problem: Steve’s competitive juices often took over on the court, and he ended up cursing and getting into fights. Every game he determined not to swear. Every game he failed. Finally, a friend told him to change his motivation. Instead of trying not to sin, he encouraged Steve to focus on doing something positive on the court.
Before the next game Steve decided to try and say three nice things to his opponents after they made good plays. Guess what? It helped! Not only did Steve’s language improve, but he didn’t get into any fights. That’s progress!
Don’t Be Passive
God doesn’t want us to live passively, trying not to break one of His laws. He wants us to live powerful lives that not only change us but also change the people around us. His grace should not only make us glad to be forgiven but (as Titus 2:14 says) “eager to do good works.”
Many men put all their efforts into avoiding sin yet end up either failing or living joyless lives. By actively looking to do good works and following God, we can live energized lives and avoid sin’s trappings. Doesn’t that sound more appealing than playing defense your whole life?
Bottom Line
Instead of trying to avoid doing the bad stuff, make an effort to do some good in the world. You were made for that.
