The Blame Game

Mountains

What is the source of wars and fights among you? Don’t they come from the cravings that are at war within you? (James 4:1)

A Marriage Mystery

In marriage two people who thrill to one another’s presence make public promises of love and devotion all their days. Yet many couples eventually find themselves enmeshed in chronic conflict and seeking to break their holy vows. How does such a thing happen? Where does such rancor come from?

Few of us would admit that we are disagreeable people. And if we concede to occasionally being so, we are quick to attribute the matter to outside influence. We point out how hungry we were, or how tired, or how sorely provoked we were by our spouse.

Mystery Solved

In contrast to our finger pointing, Scripture lays the matter squarely at our own feet, indicating the cause to be our own fleshly desires run amok. This is not to say that some desires are not legitimate. But if their thwarting leads us to wrath and anger, then these “legitimate” desires have gone beyond the bounds of legitimacy and transformed themselves into idols.

In short, the amount of conflict in our lives is a barometer of spiritual health. The only thing that will quench fleshly desire is a greater desire for God. If we recognize this fact, we have a chance of praying rightly, doing rightly, and turning our homes into a haven of peace rather than a swirl of stormy conflict.

Bottom Line

Instead of blaming everyone else, let’s demonstrate true leadership by acknowledging our shortcomings and repenting when necessary.
