“Who am I, O Sovereign Lord . . .
that you have brought me this far?” (2 Sam. 7:18)

Scripture Reading: 2 Samuel 7:1–22

In our Christian quest to go farther, we tend to overlook how far we’ve come. Few things demotivate like trying to move forward when you feel as if you’ve never budged. When was the last time your eyes were suddenly opened to a glimpse of growth? Savoring a sudden realization of progress with the One who gave it is gloriously appropriate! God wants you to celebrate progress with Him just as David did.

David’s response to God’s goodness reveals obvious reasons why he was a man after God’s own heart (see 1 Sam. 13:14). No wonder David was the apple of God’s eye (see Ps. 17:8). When we passionately surrender our hearts to God, the realization of how far we’ve come should spark similar responses in us. Let’s highlight a few:

Intimacy: Notice David sought no other audience. He left Nathan’s presence and “went in and sat before the Lord” (2 Sam. 7:18). Before we celebrate God’s unexpected blessings with others—those with hearts “after His own”—seek Him first.

Humility: Should the thought of celebrating progress with God seem arrogant? Only if we’re taking the credit! David was completely humbled by God’s goodness. He didn’t even stand in God’s presence as he celebrated. We show pride when we flaunt our gains like multicolored coats before those who don’t yet have them.

Regard for God’s Sovereignty: Notice the fitting title David attributed to God: “O Sovereign Lord!” Psalm 115:3 appropriately describes God’s sovereignty: “Our God is in heaven; he does whatever pleases him.” David’s approach to God revealed the attitude of his heart: “By Your sovereignty, I’m where I am today. I will take no credit.”

Delight: All of us enjoy doing something special for someone who responds not only with gratitude but also with excitement! Can you imagine how blessed God’s heart is when we are stunned and thrilled over His goodness? Our delight in His awesome work tenders His heart and makes us a joy to bless.

Acknowledgment: Perhaps one of God’s chief goals is to bring us to a place where we joyfully exclaim: “How great you are, O Sovereign Lord! There is no one like you!”

Have you reached the place where you can sincerely and personally make the declaration, “God, there is none like You!”? Then, beloved, no matter where you’ve been, you’ve come “so far.” Spend some time with your blessed Sovereign Lord today. Sit before Him and celebrate “that He has brought you this far.” Reflect on His goodness—His countless rescues—His tender mercies. Let Him show you a few signs of your own progress. Can you remember not so long ago when worship and His Word were not priorities? Revel in a little freedom from self-absorption.

You’ve come so far.

Celebrate. You are the apple of His eye.
