The first two books in best-selling author Sigmund Brouwer's "Watch Out for Joel!" series, have recently released from Bethany House Publishers. Available in larger print with enjoyable characters and strong life lessons, Bad Bug Blues and Long Shot are designed specifically for beginning readers.
In the first installment, Bad Bug Blues, young readers meet seven-year-old Joel Kidd, the plucky protagonist who is always falling into mischief. Kindness is the key theme throughout (Proverbs 17:17), especially as Joel's Mom sends he and his brother Ricky to a concert with Old Mr. Jones. When Joel brings along a jar of caterpillars and one escapes, he hopes Mr. Jones won't be mad.
Long Shot centers on the theme of honesty (Proverbs 12:22) and marks the return of Joel--this time with Ricky and their friend Lisa who have all just built the "world's biggest" slingshot. When Joel warns that maybe they shouldn't try it out, no one listens. After a big rock flies just a little farther than they'd like, they're faced with the dilemma of whether or not to hide their mistake.
Sigmund Brouwer's "Watch Out for Joel!" series is his latest and one of a long list of award-wining literary efforts, including everything from youth fiction to adult thrillers. A frequent speaker at schools and home schooling conventions, Brouwer has also established www.coolreading.com which helps instill good reading and writing habits in the next generation.
