Jonathan Roumie Says Filming Jesus’ Crucifixion in The Chosen Season 6 Is His Most Challenging Role Yet

The actor who portrays Jesus in the hit Bible series The Chosen says Season 6 will be the most challenging one he has yet to film -- but also the most impactful. Jonathan Roumie is the most recognized face of the series, which has been viewed by more than 250 million people worldwide and has transformed faith-based entertainment since it launched in 2019.
Season 6, which will depict the crucifixion, will be filmed in the coming weeks. Roumie made the comments to the media during a break at Sunday's K-Love Fan Awards, which will air Friday at 7:30 Eastern on TBN.
"It's brutal," he said of the emotional and physical demands of portraying Christ's death. "This is the most difficult thing I think I've ever done. It's the most difficult season. It's the most difficult role, and this being the most difficult role in the most difficult season, with the physicality that is expected, that I feel is expected, and that ultimately we will portray during Christ's suffering and death -- His passion -- I don't know anything else that could be more challenging to me as a performer."
The Chosen has followed the major events of the gospels, including the calling of the disciples, the healing of the sick, the Sermon on the Mount, and Jesus walking on water. Roumie, a devout Catholic, has openly shared that his faith has deepened throughout the filming.
Season 6 will be, Roumie said, the "most profound season of The Chosen, by far."
"This is all just an offering to Him and for souls and for reaching people on a level that they haven't reached," he said.
Roumie shared a story about the series' impact -- one that was recounted to him at the awards show by a fellow Christian entertainer.
"An artist came up to us and related a story about a woman that at the age of 70, has just begun a relationship with God. And he said, 'How did that happen?' She's like, 'Well, I just started watching this show called The Chosen, and it's got me asking all these questions,' and now she's asking him questions, and he gets to witness to her.
"That's what this is about."
On Instagram, Roumie recently opened up about his own faith journey.
"My cup runneth over with gratitude and thanksgiving for all the Lord has done in my life. Seven years ago today, my life utterly changed for the better," he wrote of being tasked with the job of portraying Jesus. "I had no idea what God was up to or how unbelievably far He would take me in service to Him. As a flawed and imperfect human being … I'm truly unworthy of the honor of playing the most perfectly Divine/Human Christ, but I will humbly continue to accept this mission for as long as He will allow me to do so."
