What You Can Do About Anxiety – Beloved Women – December 2, 2019

READ

“Do not be anxious about anything, but in every situation, by prayer and petition, with thanksgiving, present your requests to God.” (Philippians 4:6 NIV)

TODAY’S ENCOURAGEMENT

Paul commands believers not to be anxious for anything. However, this can be hard to do.  There are times in our lives when the pressures of life are so overwhelming that anxious thoughts consume us.  We think about possible outcomes in the morning, afternoon and at night.

In these moments, Paul does offer some suggestions on what we can replace our anxious thoughts with. He says: “but in every situation, by prayer and petition, with thanksgiving, present your requests to God” (Philippians 4:6 NIV).

The word petition in the Greek translates to heart-felt petition, arising out of deep personal need.  This need is urgent.  When we feel anxiety rising up, our urgent need may be the last option we try.  Paul is saying it should be our first.  He encourages us to tackle our anxiety with gratitude, as we present our urgent request to God.  Choosing not to be anxious about our circumstances, means we relinquish responsibility for the outcome of our lives, and willingly give it to God.

PRAY

Lord, thank You that You are in complete control over every area of my life.  Please help me to trust You when I am anxious.  May I choose to pray with thanksgiving, as I present my request to You. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
