Are Your Words Gracious? – Beloved Women – January 24, 2019
Let no corrupting talk come out of your mouths, but only such as is good for building up, as fits the occasion, that it may give grace to those who hear. - Ephesians 4:29 ESV
Whether it's a whisper between friends or a social media post, we have a choice about how our words will be used. Will they lift up or tear down? Ephesians 4:29 reminds us that our words should "give grace to those who hear."
Our words can be a blessing or a curse to those who hear them. We have a great responsibility every day to ensure our speech is used for good. We shouldn’t take this lightly because we are accountable for our words as much as we are for our actions. Also, it's not just about what we say, but how we say it. An impatient, sarcastic, and demeaning tone can do just as much damage as screaming and cursing.
Take an inventory of how you speak to people, especially those closest to you. Then make an effort to replace any corrupt talk that tears down and condemns with words that build up, protect, and give grace.
Dear Heavenly Father, thank You for the power of my words. May they be used to heal, comfort, and encourage for your glory. In Jesus Christ’s name, I pray. Amen.
Can you think of any changes you can make to speak more graciously?
