Why Communication Is Important in Marriage
Carrie Lowrance
“Understand this, my dear brothers and sisters: You must all be quick to listen, slow to speak, and slow to get angry.” (James 1:19)
Communication is one of the most critical things in a marriage. It’s very important to communicate with your spouse on a daily basis, especially when it comes to your children. My husband and I know how important this is with our fur babies. Over our almost thirteen years of marriage, we have had five fur babies, and three out of the five have had health issues of some kind.
Our first cat, Carlton, had chronic kidney disease, and we had to take him to get his kidneys checked once a month. Our rabbit Boots had seizures and needed phenobarbital to help control them. Our second cat, Colin, developed diabetes, cardiomyopathy, and high blood pressure. He had to have insulin shots twice a day and blood pressure meds once a day. Colin also had two incidents of low hypoglycemia and needed to go to the ER. Sometimes, my husband would have to run someone to the vet while I was at work or vice versa if we were able to make an early morning appointment.
As you can see, communication with each other was extremely important. Near the end of his life, Carlton had to have subcutaneous fluids twice a day. Boots had to have phenobarbital once a day. Most of the time, I was the one to feed Colin and give him his shot in the morning. In the evening, it was different; my husband or I would feed him and give him his shot, depending on our work schedules. We had to touch base often about who gave whom their medication or fluids over the years.
We also had to discuss schedules and who was taking the rabbit or the cat to the vet. If there was an emergency and one of us was at work, we always texted each other to keep tabs on what was going on. The same went for normal vet visits as well. The bottom line is that we are always in communication when it comes to our pets.
Even now, with our new cat, Cupcake. She is a happy, healthy calico tabby except for her allergies and a heart murmur. After having two sick boy cats, we watch her closely. A few months ago, I had to take her to the vet about an issue she was having, and after we were done, I texted my husband to let him know what was happening. Clear communication and keeping each other informed about what’s going on never goes away. We love our babies and strive to take care of the creatures that God has entrusted us with the best that we can.
If you are a parent, I’m sure you can relate. Communication is key to making sure everyone is happy and healthy. Are you struggling with communication in your marriage? Let’s pray.
Dear Lord,
I pray over my marriage right now. My spouse and I try to keep communication open but sometimes it can be hard with our crazy working schedules and taking the kids everywhere.
Help us slow down and take a few minutes to communicate daily, whether it’s sending a text message or email or taking a few extra minutes in the morning or at night to sit together and talk. I know that communication is a pillar of a good, strong marriage. Please help us to take the time we need to stay connected at all times. In your name, I pray. Amen.
