“Anyone who belongs to Christ has become a new person. The old life is gone; a new life has begun!” 2 Corinthians 5:17 (NLT)
Ideas have consequences. In fact, every idea has a consequence, for good or for bad. All your ideas—the thoughts that settle in your mind—come together to make up your worldview, the beliefs you build your life on.
Your worldview includes your beliefs about life, death, the past, the present, and the future. It includes your perspective on time, money, relationships, pain and suffering, and good and evil. It’s how you view God, yourself, and other people. Everything you believe about life is part of your worldview.
Your worldview determines your choices. Let me explain it like this: God wired your brain in such a way that before you make a decision, you instantly access all the information in your mind and ask, “What do I believe about this?” And then you make a choice—often without even realizing it—based on what you believe to be true.
For example, you decide to walk across the street because you’ve looked both ways and believe you can make it across without a car hitting you. You make decisions like this literally tens of thousands of times a day. Every time you make a choice, you access your worldview.
We spend our lives developing our worldviews, but when you begin a relationship with Christ, he offers you a new worldview. The Bible says, “Anyone who belongs to Christ has become a new person. The old life is gone; a new life has begun!” (2 Corinthians 5:17 NLT).
When you step across that line spiritually—turning from your sins and trusting in God’s grace—you get a new identity. God says everything you’ve ever done wrong is completely forgiven—wiped out and forgotten! The Bible calls it being born again. You get a fresh start in life. You get a new identity. And with that new identity, God offers you a new way to look at the world. He offers you a new worldview.
But sometimes your mind keeps playing old tapes. You keep seeing yourself and others the way the world taught you to, not the way God sees you does. When that happens, you need to get your worldview in line with God’s truth. In other words, when your false beliefs—your faulty worldview—are making you miserable, you can change them.
In the coming days, we’ll look together at what’s true and what’s not true. And I’ll help you know how to get your life in line with God’s truth and have the kind of worldview that will allow you to live out God’s purposes every day.
