Be a Spiritual Superhero

Two are better than one, because they have a good return for their labor: If either of them falls down, one can help the other up. But pity anyone who falls and has no one to help him up. Ecclesiastes 4:9

In the new TV show Supergirl, Superman’s cousin, Kara Danvers, embraces her superhero role, donning her suit and cape and each week attempts to save the city from impending doom and peril. In the first few episodes, Kara fumbled her way through practicing and controlling her powers, sometimes to the community’s detriment. The interesting thing is that Car always knew she had the powers within her. Only when she chose to use the gifts to fulfill her purpose, she began to accept herself as she was.

In my attempts to be a superhero in my home, church and community, I too begin to accept and love myself for how God has made me. But when I don’t enlist the help of the Holy Spirit, the One who empowers, I act in my own strength, which doesn’t do me or anyone else much good.

God has given all of us gifts for the edification of our brothers and sisters in Christ. We are supposed to use the gifts we have given to comfort, encourage and challenge those around us. Having people in our lives to walk alongside of us on our spiritual journeys helps us to know we are not alone.

Gifts are only good if they are used. Here are some ways you can be empowered to use the gifts God has given you:

Comfort - Do you know someone that could use a word of peace or courage during a difficult time? It is much easier to get up when you have been knocked down when someone is offering you an outstretched hand.

Challenge - Although it is difficult, lovingly pointing out sin helps get a fellow church member back on the right track. The spiritual gifts of discernment, knowledge and prophecy can help you perceive more than just a person’s outside appearance. Helping someone walk in righteousness pays in dividends not only to you but to those around you too.

Service - Are there areas in your church where you could lend a helping hand? Ask your pastor or other leader about places where you can be utilized most effectively.

Who has God placed in your life that can help empower you to use your gifts?

Take a moment to think about the people whom God could use to surround you and empower you to use the gifts the spirit has given you.

Meet regularly for prayer, encouragement, and accountability.

Check in with those friends when you are not meeting to make sure they know you are with them always.

Lord, help us to be spiritual superheroes and allow Your Holy Spirit to empower us to embrace our spiritual gifts.
