“Your word is a lamp to my feet and a light to my path.” Psalm 119:105 (ESV)

Have you ever had these thoughts when trying to read the Bible?

I don’t understand what’s going on.
 Where do I even begin?

I get bored and distracted too fast.
 I feel overwhelmed.
 I’ll get to it later.
I just don’t have the time.

If that’s you, I want you to know — you’re not alone. I’ve had those same thoughts too.

When I first started reading the Bible, I was so confused. I didn’t know what was happening or how to make sense of it all. But I chose to slow down and take it one day at a time. I read little by little, with a notebook from the dollar store and a heart that desperately wanted to know who God is.

It took me about six years to read through the whole Bible. Yep — six years. And every single minute spent in God's Word was absolutely worth it. Why?

Because through those pages, I came to know the God of the Bible as my God.

I discovered that His Word is more valuable than gold and more beautiful than I ever imagined. I began to delight in it daily because of the hope, peace, and encouragement it poured into my life.

As I read, I saw the heart of Jesus. And the more I saw Him, the more I wanted to know Him — to love Him deeply and walk closely with Him. Through His Word, I found not just stories and lessons but a personal relationship with the living God.

His Word lit up my path and gave me hope in the darkest valleys. As Psalm 119:105 says, “Your word is a lamp to my feet and a light to my path.”

While I started unsure, unmotivated, and honestly overwhelmed, I committed to staying with it. And where I lacked understanding, God met me through His Spirit. He opened my eyes, helped me grasp the truths I was reading, and gave me wisdom to apply them to my life.

So, friend, here’s my advice to you: Just start.

Open your Bible. Be honest with God about where you’re at and what you’re feeling. He already knows, and He’s right there with you.

Stay committed. Pick a book of the Bible — any book — and read it all the way through. Stick with it even when it doesn’t all make sense or when the motivation just isn’t there. Trust that God will meet you in those pages.

Because when you commit to God’s Word, you will taste and see that He is so good. “Oh, taste and see that the LORD is good! Blessed is the man who takes refuge in him!” (Psalm 34:8, ESV). Before long, you’ll find yourself coming back again and again — craving more, delighting more, and falling more deeply in love with Him.

Lord, thank You for Your Word! Please give me a deep hunger and passion to know You more and to love You more. Draw me closer to Your heart as I open Your Word. In Jesus’ Name, Amen.

Psalm 119:16, “I will delight in your statutes; I will not forget your word” (ESV).
