Jesus Knows What You Need

“For this reason he had to be made like them, fully human in every way, in order that he might become a merciful and faithful high priest in service to God, and that he might make atonement for the sins of the people.” Hebrews 2:17 (NIV)

A young father saw me struggle with a heavy box as I carried it across our church parking lot. He sprinted toward me and took the box. “You should have asked me to carry this for you,” he gently chided.

Time for transparency: “I don’t like to ask for help,” I replied.

It’s more than a distaste for looking weak and helpless. When I must depend on someone else, it means I subject myself to their schedule, scrutiny, and control over how something is done.

But when we have a need we can’t handle by ourselves — whether our car breaks down and we need a ride to work, a bill arrives and we can’t pay it, or a major surgery sends us home with a list of post-op restrictions — we have to involve someone else. Sometimes, depending on the situation, the helper may not understand the kind of help we need. Or maybe they won’t help in the way we’d like.

That’s why Hebrews 2:17 amazes me: “For this reason [Jesus] had to be made like [us], fully human in every way, in order that he might become a merciful and faithful high priest in service to God, and that he might make atonement for the sins of the people.”

Fully human in every way! Jesus became a baby who had to depend on other humans for food, safety, and even a bed that was nothing more than a manger.

While remaining fully God, Jesus chose to become human like us, so we know He understands what it is like to be dependent, limited, and under someone else’s care. The beauty of Jesus’ human experience is this: His empathy for our weaknesses makes it so much easier for us to ask Him for anything (Hebrews 4:15-16). He won’t patronize us, scrutinize our request, or minimize our need. Jesus became weak so we might find our strength in Him (2 Corinthians 13:4). He knows exactly what we need, and we can trust Him to handle our requests in the very best way.

Friend, if you struggle with asking for help because you fear others won’t “get it,” first ask the One who knows best how to help you. Ask for His strength and provision. Then ask for His wisdom to know how to handle the situation or whom you can approach with your request. Of anyone on this earth, Jesus has “been there, done that,” and He has the strength and resources to pull you through.

Thank You, God, that Your Son willingly left the glories of heaven and humbled Himself to become a helpless baby on earth. He set aside His rights as God so we could know His compassion and find comfort in His understanding of our human limitations. Thank You that He understands my weaknesses and is readily available to help me whenever I need Him. In Jesus’ Name, Amen.

FOR DEEPER STUDY

Psalm 121:2, “My help comes from the LORD, the Maker of heaven and earth” (NIV).

Jesus knows what it’s like to be humanly weak. Yet as He showed through His resurrection from the grave, He also has full divine power to overcome anything. Whenever we face anything beyond our ability to handle, we can depend on Him to bring us through.

How has God pulled you through a difficult time when life gave you more than you thought you could handle? Tell us about it in the comments.
