Careless in the Care of God

How are we going to pay for tuition next year? If rent increases, do we need to consider moving? Oh no, I have that writing deadline. Don’t forget budgets! We need to replace Regi’s shoes again? Will I have enough time to finish that executive summary?
Anxieties swirled around my mind as I sat outside with my kids. I played and replayed different scenarios in my head, did the mental math of shifting money in our budget this way and that to anticipate future expenditures, and ran through a play-by-play of my schedule for the week to make sure I had enough time to finish my work.
I was lost in my thoughts when suddenly my concentration was broken by the sound of happy shrieks. My kids were playing joyfully on the Slip ’N Slide, laughing and splashing each other with glee, without a single care in the world.
They had no concept of time or schedules, no question about whether they would go to school, no anxieties over whether they would get new shoes. They could rest securely in the confidence that their parents already knew what they needed — without a doubt, their needs would be met.
In that moment, God gently reminded me that we can rest securely in the confidence that He, our heavenly Father, already knows what we need — without a doubt, our needs will be met.
How would our lives look different if we truly believed that?
We would live “careless in the care of God,” as described in the Message paraphrase of Jesus’ words in Matthew 6:26: “Look at the birds, free and unfettered, not tied down to a job description, careless in the care of God. And you count far more to him than birds.”
If we trusted God’s heart of provision, we would be free to live in the moment, fully present to our loved ones. We would be free to love and serve God and others. Our lives would be filled with more love, joy, hope, and peace — and less stress, anxiety, impatience, and tension.
Jesus also says in Matthew 6:32-33, “The pagans run after all these things, and your heavenly Father knows that you need them. But seek first his kingdom and his righteousness, and all these things will be given to you as well” (NIV).
Because we serve a God who is our loving Father, we are no longer left fending for ourselves, living as though our lives depend entirely on our efforts. As we trust Him with all our desires and seek first His Kingdom and His righteousness, we find all our deepest needs are met by Him. We can live careless in the care of God.
Heavenly Father, thank You that You already know what I need before I do. Help me seek first Your Kingdom and righteousness so I may live careless in Your good care for me. In Jesus’ Name, Amen.
