When You Wonder if God Cares About the Details of Your Life

“Humble yourselves, therefore, under the mighty hand of God, so that he may exalt you at the proper time, casting all your cares on him, because he cares about you.” 1 Peter 5:6-7 (CSB)

We may have often heard that Jesus is our greatest joy. It’s true! What He accomplished for us in His life, death, and resurrection — so that we may be brought from death to abundant life and live with Him forever — is our greatest joy. It is the greatest joy!

But as we consider this truth, we might assume God doesn’t care about the details of our lives. While our hearts will experience full joy in eternity with Christ, this doesn’t mean that God is disinterested in the details of our lives today or that lesser joys (anything besides Jesus Himself) don’t matter at all.

We see this reflected in the hour of Jesus’ death in an exchange between Jesus and His mother, Mary (John 19:25-27).

As a mother, Mary would have cared for Jesus just like any other child. She would have nursed Him, nurtured Him, had dreams for Him, and watched with love and admiration as He grew up. And at the foot of the cross, Mary watched as the son whom she loved died a painful death. Beyond the tragedy, there was also the practical implication that she was losing one of the people most likely to care for her in her old age.

This was a detail Jesus cared about deeply. While meeting the spiritual needs of all humanity, He also met the physical needs of His mother. He used some of His final breaths to entrust her care to one of His most beloved disciples, John.

This exchange between Jesus and Mary offers such sweet assurance if we are ever tempted to believe that our worries, longings, dreams — and even our joys! — are too small for God’s care.

As 1 Peter 5:6-7 says, “Humble yourselves, therefore, under the mighty hand of God, so that he may exalt you at the proper time, casting all your cares on him, because he cares about you.”

Notice the verse says “all your cares.” The promise isn’t just for the big, eternal cares. The promise is that He cares for you. Jesus is deeply invested in every detail of your personhood, pain, and joy. With the weight of the world on His shoulders on the cross, Jesus tenderly cared for His mother’s earthly needs. And He continues to do the same for you and me.

While our joy will be most satiating when Jesus, our greatest joy, is at the center of our affections, we can also find joy in the fact that Jesus cares for our other joys, burdens, desires, worries, and dreams. They must be rightly ordered, but they matter deeply to Him.

He cares about you.

Heavenly Father, we praise You as the only joy that can truly satisfy our longings! Help us to keep You at the center of our affection as we welcome You into all the details of our lives. In Jesus’ Name, Amen.
