“I have filled him with the Spirit of God, giving him great wisdom, ability, and expertise in all kinds of crafts.” Exodus 31:3 (NLT)

When I was growing up, my family attended a small Indian church in Dallas, Texas. The weekly prayer meetings and worship services were mostly in my parents’ native tongue, Malayalam. But once a month, our church hosted a “Youth Meeting,” a service in English geared toward the younger generation. Kids could sign up to sing, preach, recite memory verses, perform a skit, or compete in Bible trivia.

All talents were on full display! I enjoyed watching my peers do their thing, but I convinced myself, because I couldn’t sing or preach and didn’t even like to be on stage, I must not be called to do God’s work.

But then I came across the story of Bezalel.

In Exodus 31:1-3, after God had given Moses detailed instructions on building and furnishing the tabernacle, the Lord explained who He had gifted to help execute this project: “Look, I have specifically chosen Bezalel son of Uri, grandson of Hur … I have filled him with the Spirit of God, giving him great wisdom, ability, and expertise in all kinds of crafts” (NLT).

From the framework to the curtains to the priestly garments to the sacred anointing oil, Bezalel was instrumental in almost every aspect of setting up the tabernacle!

How refreshing it was for me to read that God doesn’t just fill pastors, preachers, or musicians with His Spirit. He also equips ordinary people like Bezalel, a craftsman, to accomplish His purpose. Just like his grandfather, Hur — who joined Aaron in holding up Moses’ arms during a battle with the Amalekites (Exodus 17:12) — Bezalel worked behind the scenes. And it was all for the glory of God!

Romans 12:6a reminds us, “In his grace, God has given us different gifts for doing certain things well” (NLT). Friend, the uniqueness of God’s gifts are as varied as the believers who possess them.

I have a cousin with a real knack for interior design. God allowed her to help decorate her church’s new building.

My brother-in-law has a passion for cars. A few years ago, he organized a car show at a local children’s hospital. What a blessing it was to so many children and their parents!

As for me, I’ve been writing down my thoughts since I purchased my first journal at a fifth-grade book fair. I never thought God would one day use those thoughts to encourage others.

Our giftings might not sound super spiritual, but whatever they are, let’s ask the Lord how to use them for His glory! All He desires from us is a willing and obedient heart to serve. You never know … Maybe you'll bless your neighbor. Maybe you'll bless the nations.

Center stage or behind the scenes, God can use it all.

Father, help me to be fully satisfied in You and with how You have made me. Please show me what You have placed inside of me, and teach me how to use those gifts for Your glory. In Jesus' Name, Amen.
