Receiving Food With Gratitude Instead of Guilt

“For everything created by God is good, and nothing is to be rejected if it is received with thanksgiving, for it is made holy by the word of God and prayer” (1 Timothy 4:4-5, ESV).

You weren't even hungry. You walked into the kitchen and told yourself, It’s just a small slice.

An hour later, you did it again. Just one more. It won't even count. Then somewhere between the first piece and the fourth, you stopped tasting it entirely.

By evening, half the pie was gone, and you were standing at the counter with a fork you don't remember picking up, staring at what's left. Might as well eat the rest and start again tomorrow.

I've heard some version of this story from other women more times than I can count. And if I'm honest? I've lived it too. It isn't actually about pie (or whatever food tempts you). It's about this cycle: eat, regret, promise yourself tomorrow will be different, repeat.

There are two paths you know don’t work: Legalism has you white-knuckling through the holidays, tracking every bite, and focusing on controlling the gift, you've forgotten the Giver. With the second path, license, you tell yourself grace means freedom to overindulge, taking the gift and ignoring the boundaries set over your body by the Giver.

Scripture warns against gluttony (Proverbs 23:20-21), but at the same time, our standing before God is not determined by what we eat (1 Corinthians 8:8). Wisdom avoids excess in either direction. If it's all about the pie, you're missing the One who made it. If you refuse it altogether, you're missing Him too.

But there’s a better way, and Scripture is clear about the solution. Food is made holy through thanksgiving.

“For everything created by God is good, and nothing is to be rejected if it is received with thanksgiving, for it is made holy by the word of God and prayer” (1 Timothy 4:4-5).

Eating, at its best, is an act of stewardship and worship, an opportunity to glorify God (1 Corinthians 10:31) with a thankful heart. Instead of asking, “How much?” or “Should I?” Ask, “Am I stewarding this for God's glory?”

Stewardship then becomes your compass. Not a rule stopping you. A relationship reminding you that your body is a gift to care for.

Guilt won't get you there; it just sends you back to the counter for comfort. Gratitude is the sweet spot: a reason to eat and a reason to stop that isn't a rule you invented. It's a gift you want to steward.

So before the pie comes out, ask: “Am I stewarding this for God's glory?”

If yes, eat it. Enjoy it fully. Thank God for the taste and the people around your table. That's the gift, received exactly as it was meant to be.

If no, ask Him what you're actually hungry for, seek Him, and then set the fork down. Not because you failed. But because you recognize there is something deeper your soul is craving.

Not a diet plan. Not a rule. A relationship.

Let gratitude, not guilt, shape this season.

God, thank You for this table and for grace that never runs out. Teach me to ask at every meal: “Am I still eating with You?” Let gratitude always point me back to You. In Jesus' name, amen.
