Experiencing LIFE Today - Dec. 19, 2012

You are God’s gift to people in need

If you haven't any charity in your heart, you have the worst kind of heart trouble.”– Bob Hope

The most amazing gifts from Christ don't come with ribbons and bows. They are the gifts that the Holy Spirit gives us – gifts of grace, gifts of mercy – gifts that God intends for us to give away to others. One of these amazing gifts is the prompting of the Holy Spirit.

My wife, Libby, was sitting at a table working one day when all of a sudden a thought popped into her mind: It was a year ago today. The thought clicked in Libby’s heart. Twelve months ago, an acquaintance of hers had buried her infant child.

Libby started praying for this young woman, and just couldn’t stop. While she was praying, the Holy Spirit prompted her to call. We know it was the Holy Spirit's prompting, because Libby did not want to call. But the prompting wouldn’t go away. Call her! Just call her and let her know that you're praying.

Libby finally made the call and talked to the woman's husband. “Ah, Libby, thank you so much for calling. This week has been much harder than you can begin to imagine….” The next day, the woman called Libby and told her the rest of the story: On the day before the anniversary of the death of her child, she had miscarried a child in the second trimester – the same day that Libby was prompted to pray and call.

“I will ask the Father, and He will give you another Helper [or comforter, advocate, intercessor], that He may be with you forever;that is the Spirit of truth, whom the world cannot receive, because it does not see Him or know Him, but you know Him because He abides with you and will be in you.”– John 14:16-17 (NASB)

I'm so glad the Holy Spirit prompts us so that we can get involved in what He's doing in people's souls, so that we can be His gift to others as His Spirit helps, comforts, advocates, and intercedes through us. It’s an incredible gift and a sober responsibility to be on the front lines of what God is doing.

Holy Spirit, I am open to Your prompting today. Speak to me, guide me, make me willing to let You minister through me this season. Amen.
