Defend the Truth

Read Jude 1:3-4

“Dear friends, although I was very eager to write to you about the salvation we share, I felt compelled to write and urge you to contend for the faith that was once for all entrusted to God’s holy people. For certain individuals whose condemnation was written about long ago have secretly slipped in among you. They are ungodly people, who pervert the grace of our God into a license for immorality and deny Jesus Christ our only Sovereign and Lord.”

Reflect

How have you noticed false teachers “perverting the grace of our God” in our churches today? What can you do to “contend for the faith”?

Today many Christians are hearing and believing false messaging.  The false messages being conveyed is often either that “God has forgiven me so now I can do what I want” or “Who is God to tell me what is right or wrong”? Well, who is God to tell us right from wrong? Jude answers this question.

In Jude, verse 4, Jude calls his half-brother, Jesus, our “only Sovereign and Lord”. According to Merriam-Webster a sovereign is “one that exercises supreme authority” and a lord is “one having power and authority over others”. Jude is reminding us that Jesus has the final say about what is right and what is wrong. He has the authority to tell us how to live.

Jude was writing this letter to early Jewish Christians to remind them that they needed to be on guard and be prepared to defend the faith. False teachers had somehow infiltrated the ranks and were now leading people astray. These “ungodly people” were “perverting the grace” that was so lavishly given. The grace of God was meant to be a gift that would save us from our sins. It was never intended to be a permit to practice corruption.

The same holds true for believers today. There are many false teachers out there who are perverting God’s grace! We need to be prepared to contend for the faith. To do that, we need to know the Scriptures for ourselves so that we will not be easily led astray. We need to pray for discernment in the Spirit. Friend, as a believer in Jesus Christ, you have been entrusted with the truth. May we earnestly defend it.

Pray

Sovereign Lord, I submit myself to Your authority. You are God and You have every right to tell me how to live. Please give me wisdom and discernment to be able to spot false teachings. Help me to stand firm and defend the truth You have entrusted to me. Amen.
