Giving Is Better than Receiving

Read Hebrews 13:15-16

Through him then let us continually offer up a sacrifice of praise to God, that is, the fruit of lips that acknowledge his name. Do not neglect to do good and to share what you have, for such sacrifices are pleasing to God.

How do you strive to share what you have?

Even if we have 20/20 vision, most of us could use some divine “eye surgery.”

We know that our lives could—and should—be more Christ-like. We know that we’re supposed to look not only to our own interests, but to the interests of others (Philippians 2:4). And we usually feel convicted by Jesus’ words in Mark 12:31: “You shall love your neighbor as yourself.”

Yet all too often, our focus is on ourselves. Think about a typical day. Much of it is spent trying to make life work without God in the center. But we expect Him to cooperate with us—relating to us on our terms, revolving around our plans, solving problems so we can live the way we want to live. And while we may think our lives are humming along just fine, we are deceived. Gradually, choice by choice, a chasm between us and God grows wider and deeper.

Ready to let God do that divine “eye surgery”? Ask Him to refocus your vision. Ask Him to give you a heart for others—showing you that giving is better than receiving.

Lord, help me to be sensitive to the needs around me. Help me to stay tuned into my family and friends ... and to do good in their lives, sharing what I have. Amen.
