Who Told You?

August 5

Read Colossians 1:7-8 (ESV)

...just as you learned it from Epaphras our beloved fellow servant. He is a faithful minister of Christ on your behalf and has made known to us your love in the Spirit.

Reflect

How do we come to saving faith in Jesus Christ?

How did you become a Christian? Chances are someone shared the Gospel with you. Maybe it was your parents or another family member. Maybe it was your Sunday school teacher or pastor? Maybe you heard the message of Jesus on a radio program or during an altar call at a concert. But before you could accept the Gospel, someone had to tell you about it.

In today’s verse, we learn that it was Epaphras who shared the Gospel with the Colossians. He was a Colossian himself who had likely heard the Gospel in Ephesus from Paul (Acts 19:10) and then went back to his hometown to spread the Good News. Paul did not plant the church at Colossae, Epaphras did. Paul referred to him as a “beloved fellow servant” and a “faithful minister of Christ.” Now Paul was in prison and Epaphras was there with him.

In Philemon 1:23, Paul mentioned “Epaphras, my fellow prisoner in Christ Jesus, sends greetings to you…”. We don’t know the details about why Epaphras was in Rome or the details of his imprisonment. But from today’s verse, we do know that he “made known” to Paul the love the Colossians have for the church because of the Holy Spirit. While there isn’t much we know about Epaphras, we can learn an important lesson from his life. He was faithful to the call to share the Gospel with others.

In Romans 10:17, Paul wrote that “faith comes from hearing, and hearing through the word of Christ.” If we want people to place their faith in Jesus Christ, we have to tell them about Him! Epaphras did this! We don’t know all of the circumstances of his conversion. But we do know that he heard the Gospel, he responded in faith, and then he spread the Word!

Friends, think about who told you about Jesus? Have you ever had an opportunity to tell that person and thank them for the impact they had on your life? If not, I’d encourage you to do so today.

Who do you know who needs to hear the message of the Gospel? Someone told you! Pass it on.

Pray

Lord, thank You for sending someone to share the Gospel with me. Show me who I should tell about You. Give me wisdom and courage to share the truth of Your Word with them. May they put their faith in You, too. Amen.
