From His Heart - Week of March 26

  • 2010 Mar 26

And let us not lose heart in doing good, for in due time we shall reap
if we do not grow weary.  Galatians 6:9

Have you ever tried to lose weight?  It can be SO discouraging.  I mean you exercise, you cut out sweets, you eat more vegetables, more salads and less junk - and you don't seem to lose a pound.  UGH!!  What gives!?  When that happens to me the only conceivable answer is an all-you-can-eat pizza buffet!

Seriously, it can be quite demoralizing to try hard to lose weight and see little to no results.  But the truth of the matter is this: if you keep up an exercise and diet program, you will eventually see the results you desire.  It just takes time and your commitment to keep going and not quit.

The same is true in the Christian life.  God says, "We shall reap if we do not grow weary."  That is a promise you and I can cling to with all our strength.  God cannot lie.   He is telling us to not give up until we see the harvest.

In the late 1800's, Thomas Alva Edison was credited with inventing the incandescent light bulb.  Awesome!  Did he invent it on the first try?  No way!  How about the second try?  No!  The tenth try?  Not even close.  Edison tried thousands of times for two years, with no success.  But he did not give up and wallow in discouragement.  According to The World Book Encyclopedia (1993), Edison himself said, "I have not failed.  I have just found 10,000 ways that won't work."  (You gotta love that kind of attitude.)

Old Tom knew that every failure showed him how not to do it.  And his persistence paid off.  Because he did not grow weary in "doing good," he eventually reaped a great harvest, and the incandescent light bulb was born.

What have you been working towards and praying for with no visible answer?  Is it your marriage to get better?  Or your business situation to turn around?  Or your wayward child to come back to God?  Or your future spouse to come into your life?  Or that ministry to get off the ground?  Or that sinful habit to be broken?

Whatever you have been praying for and believing God for and sowing seeds of faith for, DON'T QUIT ON IT!  Don't lose heart and throw in the towel.  A great harvest is coming IF you keep on keeping on.

"But as for me, I will hope continually, and will praise You yet more and more."  Psalm 71:14
