ID’d!
“Or do you not know that your body is the temple of the Holy Spirit who is in you, whom you have from God, and you are not your own?” (1 Corinthians 6:19 NKJV).
Awhile back I picked up one of my bags at the airport and was wheeling it away when someone came chasing after me and said, “That’s my suitcase!” I checked the ID tag, and sure enough, it belonged to her. To my surprise, we had identical suitcases. We determined which one belonged to whom by checking the ID tags.
When you become a Christian, God puts His ID tag on you. Ephesians 1:13 tells us, “And when you believed in Christ, he identified you as his own by giving you the Holy Spirit, whom he promised long ago” (NLT).
In other words, you belong to Him now. The Holy Spirit has come to dwell in believers and seal them. In fact, I don’t think we fully realize all the incredible things that transpire when we became Christians.
It’s a dramatic shift. We pass from darkness to light. We effectively become citizens of Heaven rather than citizens of Hell. We’re justified, which means that God has forgiven our sins and put the righteousness of Christ into our spiritual account.
And if that weren’t enough, God seals us with the Holy Spirit.
Someone asked an elderly man who was known for his godly life, “What you do when you get tempted?”
“Well,” he replied, “I just looked up to Heaven and say, ‘Lord, your property is in danger.’”
I like that. Because we belong to God, He has sealed us with the Holy Spirit. We’re His children. We’re His possessions.
The Bible says, “Or do you not know that your body is the temple of the Holy Spirit who is in you, whom you have from God, and you are not your own? For you were bought at a price” (1 Corinthians 6:19-20 NKJV).
Because Jesus bought us, we now belong to Him.
