The Encourager

This devotional was written by Kelly McFadden

But encourage one another daily, as long as it is called today, so that none of you may be hardened by sin's deceitfulness. —Hebrews 3:13

The Colorado football team had a loyal fan from 1998-2003 - The CU Barrel Man.  Suspenders held a ‘barrel' to the frame of this devoted fan, and a synthetic buffalo-skin wrap could be found around his waist.  The Barrel Man attended every football game.  He moved up and down the stadium ringing a cowbell, supporting his team, and encouraging fans by bringing spirit, dedication and enthusiasm.  He was known and loved by the Boulder community.  Rain (or perhaps snow) or shine, wins or losses, the bare-chested Barrel Man could always be found cheering for the Colorado Buffaloes.

Most athletic teams would tell you it is easier to win at home.  There is added motivation and confidence when a crowd is for you.  Knowing you are believed in can make a person soar to new heights.

Dr. Gordon Coulter, Director of the Youth Cohort for the M.A.C.E. Program and Assistant Professor for the Haggard School of Theology at Azusa Pacific University, said, "People rise to the standard expected of them."  When we encourage each other in our Christian faith we raise the bar.  Christians need others to stick by, encourage and guide each other so our faith can remain strong.  It is harder to falter when you have an extra set of eyes watching out for you.  As Christians we need to encourage, bring spirit and show dedication to each other - no matter the weather.
It's impossible to live the Christian life alone.

  1. Who in your life has provided encouragement?  How did this impact your life?
  2. What are ways you can encourage others in their faith?

Psalm 10:17; Acts 4:32-36; 1 Thessalonians 3:7-10
