A Prayer for the Overwhelmed Heart - iBelieve Truth: A Devotional for Women - September 8, 2026
I will lift up my eyes to the hills from where comes my help; my help comes from the Lord who made heaven and earth. Psalm 121:1-2
I checked my phone after wrapping up my daughter's weekly swim lesson. 13 notifications. From one friend. As I opened the messages and read through several paragraphs, my heart ached for her. Health challenges. A grandchild on the way. Two weddings to plan. Financial concerns. Aging parents. And a difficult family relationship she’s been navigating for years. Her last message:
“I’m sorry to lay all of this on you.”
I reminded her she didn’t need to apologize because, well, that's what friends are for. Without her saying it, I knew she was overwhelmed. Though our circumstances were different, I understood exactly how she felt. I've been there. Juggling the responsibilities of being a wife, mom, managing a full-time job, and seeking to serve my church and our community faithfully has left me feeling, on some days, as if I could barely come up for air. Perhaps this describes your season of life. In a biblical context, the term “overwhelmed” describes a soul that is deeply burdened or distressed, or overcome by circumstances, emotions, or spiritual challenges. [1] But here’s the thing: overwhelm isn’t about guilt. It’s not a sign that you’re failing or doing something wrong. As a pastoral counselor, I’ve sat with many women who quietly carry this same burden. It's the reality of living in today’s fast-paced culture, one in which we often stretch ourselves beyond our limits and feel the pressure to keep doing more, when our bodies are telling us to slow down.
So what do we do? When life feels heavy, it's easy to look around at our circumstances, responsibilities, and everything demanding our attention. But Scripture invites us to something different. Don't look around. Look up. Psalm 121 offers a beautiful invitation to the heart that feels overwhelmed. Instead of looking around at everything that threatens our peace, the psalmist teaches us to lift our eyes to One from whom our help comes. As the psalmist writes, “I lift up my eyes to the hills,” he isn’t just taking in the scenery around him. For travelers in that time, the mountains were symbols of the unknown—places where danger could hide or where overwhelming obstacles stood in the way of the journey ahead. They often faced robbers, difficult terrain, and uncertainty along these roads. While others looked to high places for false sources of security, the psalmist looked to the Lord.[2]
The response is a beautiful reminder: “My help comes from the Lord, the Maker of heaven and earth.” By focusing on God as our Creator, we are reminded that the One who created the very hills we fear is greater than the heavy circumstances that overwhelm us. His peace doesn’t come from the things changing, but from the loving Father who watches over it all.[3] If you’re feeling overwhelmed today, Psalm 121 is a great reminder of where to start. Lift your eyes. Cast your cares on Him (Psalm 55:22). Remember that God doesn't want you to try to do this on your own. Reach out to your community. Sometimes our overwhelm isn't simply because there's too much to do—it's because we're trying to carry it all alone. God has called you His beloved daughter, not Superwoman. While the world may applaud self-sufficiency, Scripture reminds us that we were created to bear one another's burdens, not carry every burden by ourselves.
Is there something someone could help you with? Is there a responsibility you could delegate, or a boundary you need to set to protect your emotional and spiritual well-being? And sometimes, seasons of overwhelm point to a deeper need for support. Reaching out to a trusted pastor, pastoral counselor, or licensed therapist isn't a sign of weak faith—it's often an act of wisdom and humility. God frequently brings His care to us through the people He places around us. What is one area of your life that has left you feeling overwhelmed? What would it look like to intentionally "lift your eyes" to the Lord in that situation this week?
Let's pray ...
Father,
When life’s circumstances overwhelm me, remind me to look up to You. Help me to release control of the things that are too hard for me. I pray that even though circumstances may not change, that overwhelm will be replaced by Your surpassing peace. Calm my mind as I focus on You. Thank you for being my Keeper. Thank you for watching over me. Grant me everything I need for this day.
In Jesus' name,
Amen,

Joining us this week is worship leader turned viral comedian Heather Land. After growing up in the shadow of her mother’s decades-long addiction, Heather reflects on how this painful season—alongside her unexpected shift from the worship stage to the world of comedy—taught her that while our paths may take unforeseen turns, our core calling to encourage and uplift others remains constant.
Later in the episode, we’ll hear from Rachel Kessler, an Episcopal priest and Kenyon College chaplain who completed her PhD in medieval studies at the University of Toronto before pivoting to seminary after hitting academic burnout, then built a following as the “Nerdy Priest” on TikTok after a student secretly downloaded the app on her phone.
