Finding Joy in the Present Instead of Dreading the Future - iBelieve Truth: A Devotional for Women - August 13, 2026
"You make known to me the path of life; you will fill me with joy in your presence, with eternal pleasures at your right hand." - Psalm 16:11
Have you ever caught yourself living in tomorrow's problems instead of today's blessings? One doctor's appointment, one unexpected phone call, one difficult conversation—and suddenly your mind races ahead, imagining every possible outcome. I've been there.
When difficult news has shaken me, my first response has sometimes been, "God, are You there?" Once the initial wave of emotion passes, I know He is. Yet fear has a way of pulling my attention away from God's greatness and fixing it on the uncertainty before me. Before we talk about joy, we need to remember who God is.
The One who measured the oceans in the palm of His hand (Isaiah 40:12) knows you personally. He knows the end from the beginning. He knows every word before you speak it, every thought before it forms, and every detail of your life (Psalm 139:2-4 LB). Nothing catches Him by surprise—not your health concerns, your finances, your family struggles, or the fears that seem to grow louder when the house grows quiet.
There was a season when bedtime became difficult for me. Recurring dreams about my two young sons left me unsettled. Were they warnings? Were they simply my imagination? I didn't know. But I did know that fear was beginning to cloud my confidence in God's loving care. So each night I turned to Scripture and prayer. Not because they were a formula to erase fear, but because they were the only solid ground beneath my feet. Slowly, familiar verses began speaking to my heart in fresh ways. God wasn't distant. He was near.
Most of us carry some version of that same dread. We worry about our children, our health, our marriages, aging parents, or what tomorrow may bring. We long for answers. Yet Psalm 16:11 offers something even better. God doesn't promise to reveal every detail of the future. He promises to show us the path—and to fill us with joy in His presence. That changes everything. Faith isn't knowing every step ahead. It's trusting the Almighty One who already does.
Jesus entered our world and experienced sorrow, rejection, and suffering so we could know Him—not as a distant God, but as a compassionate Savior who walks beside us. As we spend time in His presence and His Word, fear gradually loosens its grip. Circumstances may not change overnight, but our hearts do. David didn't defeat Goliath because he had all the answers. He walked toward his giant because he knew the God who walked with him.
Today, choose His presence over your predictions. Open His Word before opening the door to worry. Sit quietly with Him before rehearsing tomorrow's "what ifs." His peace may not explain every circumstance, but it will remind you that the One holding your future is already with you today. He has already gone before you. He walks beside you now, and His grace will meet you when tomorrow becomes today. He is—and always will be—more than enough.
Let's pray ...
Loving Savior,
Thank you for walking with me every step of life's journey. Forgive me when I allow fear of tomorrow to steal the joy You have for me today. Help me rest in Your presence, trust Your leading, and remember that nothing I face is ever a surprise to You. Fill my heart with Your peace and let Your joy become my strength, one day at a time.
In Jesus' name,
Amen.
