Finding Joy in the Simple Things - iBelieve Truth: A Devotional for Women - September 28, 2026
“Therefore my heart is glad, and my whole being rejoices; my flesh also dwells secure.” - Psalm 16:9 ESV
A few years ago, a sweet friend presented me with a birthday gift—the most charming wall plaque for my home. It was made of wood, painted white, and accented with bright turquoise butterflies and flowers. And right in the center, it had a quote that said, “Enjoy the little things.”
I remember the day she gave me that gift. Life was hectic at the time. I worked full-time, did my best to take care of responsibilities at home, and helped my pastor husband in our leadership role at church. I loved my new plaque and couldn’t wait to hang it on my living room wall, but the words it displayed also convicted me. Had I been enjoying the little things in life? Or had I been so busy checking off items on my to-do list that I was missing the most important things?
Psalm 16 reminds us of the many reasons we have to be joyful. David, the writer of the psalm, proclaims that God is his portion. (Psalm 16:5) He delights in his inheritance and shows gratitude for God’s instruction. (Psalm 16:6-7) He knows God is at his right hand, so he will “not be shaken.” (Psalm 16:8) Then David writes that because of these things, his heart is glad.
“Therefore my heart is glad, and my whole being rejoices; my flesh also dwells secure.” (Psalm 16:9)
Life is full of distractions, responsibilities, and problems that demand our attention. Even in slow seasons, we can get so focused on things we deem important that we overlook the simple blessings of a life lived in the presence of the Lord. God is our portion. He is everything we need, yet we often forget to find joy in the amazingness of who he is.
Psalm 16 gives us hope in times when our eyes have been pulled away from what brings us joy. Sometimes all we need is a reminder of the reasons we have to rejoice. In fact, like the psalmist David, our whole being will want to rejoice when we spend time reflecting on God. He is our Provider, Sustainer, and Source of everlasting joy.
If you’ve struggled with finding joy lately, you’re not alone. Today, let’s allow Psalm 16 to be our gentle nudge away from distraction and toward God’s presence, where fullness of joy is found. I still have my wall decor—the precious gift from my friend—hanging where it is always visible as a constant reminder to enjoy God’s abundant blessings. As we turn our hearts toward God right now, let’s ask him to renew our focus and fill us with gladness. Through him, we will discover that the simplest things in life are truly the blessings that bring us the most joy.
Let's pray ...
Dear God,
Thank you for the little things in life that bring me so much joy. When I stop and look around, I notice the many blessings you’ve so generously given. Yet there are times when I get overwhelmed by problems and responsibilities and forget to enjoy the simple things. Forgive me, Father. Help me to always seek joy in your presence, even when life is hard. Help me to share that joy with others. My heart is glad because of who you are in my life.
In Jesus’ name I pray,
Amen.
