“For in Christ all the fullness of the Deity lives in bodily form, and in Christ you have been brought to fullness. He is the head over every power and authority.” Colossians 2:9-10

Singleness is often treated as something that needs to be “fixed.” As someone who went to a Bible college, I can share that everyone thinks you are deeply upset if you are not in a relationship or not married. Many of these fellow students of mine grew up in Christian culture, with the belief that singleness must be completely miserable.

Even though this is a common misconception, it needs to end. Single Christians can be just as happy as married Christians because we all equally know the Lord. When it comes to God, He does not look down on us if we are never married. While it is true that He created marriage, in no way does He say that you have to be married in order to live a life of service to Him.

God loves us regardless of our marital status. Whether we are married or single, He loves us (Romans 5:8). Moreover, whether we are married or not, we can live for God. Singleness is a blessed gift from the Lord (1 Corinthians 7:7). It should not be treated as a curse.

Many people wouldn’t categorize singleness as a gift, but it truly is. Sadly, within Christian culture, we are often taught that singleness should be avoided at all costs. It is treated as though you are lacking something in your life. To think a Christian is lacking anything in their life is to question God’s love for His children. As Christians, none of us is lacking anything.

The Apostle Paul tells us in Colossians 2:9-10 that we have been brought to fullness in Christ. What this means is that we are complete in Christ. We are not lacking in anything when we know Jesus as our Lord and Savior. From Colossians 2:9-10, we are taught the vital truth that we are enough in Christ. Regardless of marital status, we have been given fullness in Him.

The idea of being full or complete means that we have everything we need. We are not deficient in anything. Rather, we have everything in Christ, including support, kindness, and love.

Whenever you are feeling down about being single, know that it is a beautiful gift and you are not lacking in any way. You are not inferior, nor will your life be less-than by being single. Singleness enables us to do many great things for the Lord and to stay focused on Him rather than other things. The married couple is worried about pleasing their spouse, whereas the single Christian is concerned with pleasing the Lord (1 Corinthians 7:32-34).

As single Christians, we can give our full attention to God and serve Him with our entire heart. Single Christians have the blessing of being able to dedicate more time to the Lord. Married couples must ensure they are dedicating time to each other in addition to God. As singles, we can use this extra time to spend even more time with God.

Both singleness and marriage are beautiful in the eyes of God. In no way does God think one is better than the other. If you are a single Christian, rejoice in the truth of being single. In the same way, if you are married, rejoice in the truth of being married. Neither married life nor single life needs to be treated as superior or inferior. They were both created by God and bring glory to Him.

Sometimes, as singles, it can be hard to navigate the world due to all the hate that is pressed upon us. However, even amidst this hate, we can serve the Lord boldly. As a single Christian, choose to live your life for God and rejoice fully in the position He has called you. You are wonderful, beautiful, and valuable just as you are. Not being married doesn’t take any of these qualities away from you.

Let's pray:
Dear Jesus, as a single Christian, I often feel as though I am inferior to others or that I’m lacking something in my life. Please help me to remember that I have been brought to fullness in You and that You love me. It can be hard to be single at times, but I know I can still live for You. Help me to live an abundant life in service to You and allow my singleness to be a gift to others as well. Thank You, Lord, for Your goodness. Amen.

If you've been feeling tired, overwhelmed, depleted, or just quietly wondering where God is in the middle of a very full life — this episode is for you. And honestly? It might be for me too, because I'm recording this in one of those seasons myself.

Today we're doing something a little different. Instead of going deep in a passage, we're talking about what to do when deep feels like too much — when you need less, not more. Specifically, I'm walking you through one of my favorite practices for weary seasons: handwriting scripture.

Not typing it. Not scrolling past it. Actually writing it out, slowly, in your own hand — because something happens in your brain when you do that. The words land differently. They go deeper. And over time, they become part of that personal library of God's voice that the Holy Spirit can pull from when you need it most. That's what Psalm 119:11 means when it says I have hidden your word in my heart — it's scripture moving into your long-term memory, where it lives and stays even when you haven't opened your Bible in weeks.

I'm sharing the five verses I wrote out for myself today — and why each one hit me fresh even though I've known some of them for years. This episode is part of our How to Study the Bible Podcast, a show that brings life back to reading the Bible and helps you understand even the hardest parts of Scripture.
